DRS and Associates is made up of a wonderful team of creative and hardworking professionals – and now you can get to know them a little better. Here’s a look at one of our design wizards, Joellyn!
Joellyn Bohlen, Graphic Design/Production Assistant
A true Midwestern girl at heart, Joellyn Bohlen grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, Illinois before officially moving to the Windy City in 2001. A lover of photography from the pre-digital camera days (when you still had to go in a darkroom and get your hands dirty), Joellyn initially went to college for a Fine Arts degree in Photography. But being three hours away from home, she missed big city life and decided to go back to Chicago and work full-time instead. After some years working in the bookkeeping department at a bank, as a legal secretary at a law firm, and in the commercial real estate department at a bank, Joellyn knew it was time for some much-needed creativity.
In 2007, Joellyn decided to go back to school to pursue a Graphic Design degree, where she could incorporate her photography background in a more creative profession. Shortly after receiving her BA in Art, Media and Design from DePaul University, Joellyn began working as a graphic designer at a boutique creative firm in Chicago in 2011. But another change was in the air. Tired of the cold and ready for a sunny, palm tree filled adventure, Joellyn, her husband, and Darby Kat packed their bags and headed West in 2012. Although she misses Dunkin Donuts, Da Bears and the “L”, the warm weather and Southern California scenery makes up for it.
Here at DRS and Associates, Joellyn works with the creative team on various graphic design, social media and marketing projects. “DRS is a great place to work,” says Joellyn. “I feel like my position was made just for me.” In addition to working with a great team, she loves the new building and the four-legged friends around the office.
Destination: What is your favorite place to visit or journey you have taken?
I’ve always wanted to travel to Japan and in 2009, I finally had the opportunity. One of my closest friends was stationed at an Air Force base just outside of Tokyo so I went to visit her and see the sights. My favorite part about it was the peaceful Buddhist Temples mixed in with the hustle and bustle of the city. I only had a week there so I’m hoping someday to go back and travel to Kyoto.
Renovation: What would you update, remodel or change in your home or life?
In the past few years I’ve completely revamped my life. I went from working in a commercial real estate department at a bank to getting my Bachelor of Arts degree and starting my career in graphic design. On top of that, last year I moved from Chicago to LA. Right now I want to just relax and enjoy my recent decisions.
Significance: What is, has or brings great meaning to you… perhaps a cherished item, milestone or that “ah-ha” moment or event?
Besides family, friends and of course my cat, music is a big part of my life. Most specifically the band, Pearl Jam. Their music has been a huge part of my life for the past 20 years and some would say I’m a bit “obsessed”. I don’t think I’m that crazy though, I mean, I just have a PJ tattoo, travel the country to see them and I used to have PRLJM5 as my license plate in Illinois. That’s normal, right?
